New Energy Center of National Taiwan University has proposed to the study of “Solar Building Technology” as the research theme. New Energy Center has adopted the management philosophy of the academy-industry cooperation, has emphasized the research and development of system integration and innovation, has applied the top down operation model.

It has already proved to be effective in running and management and achieved a great contribution to the academy and industry. We can see that NEC has assisted the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs to promote the application of solar energy and the development of new products. NEC also has led the development of solar heat pump water heater and LED lighting industry. In the tight international competition, NEC of National Taiwan University has won KAUST GRP CID award. The other winners of the award are: Cornell University, Stanford University, University of Oxford, Texas A & M University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Utrecht University. The research theme of the GRP award included two subjects, one is solar-assisted cooling/heating for building, and the other one is solar-powered LED lighting. It covered the system integration and components research. It is the continuity of the phase two projects of NEC supported by the Energy Bureau and an expansion of the research projects. The research grant amount is US$1.5 million every year for three years. The total of US$4.5 million grant has awarded NEC to proceed with the research work and to establish KAUST Solar Energy Research Center.
