Science and Technology have brought a lot of benefits to the mankind and improved a great deal to the material life, but it also made a lot of damage to the environment and caused the problems for the shortage and using-up for the energy due to the growth of economic. If the situation continues to develop, the final solutions to face the mankind may have only three ways : (1) by the natural principle, go back the primitive method, to start the war, to fight for the limited resources and struggle for the living conditions; (2) by the moral persuasion, go back to live the primitive or easy life; (3) by using the human intelligence, go to find the solution or the preventive method.

     The meaning of eternal development is to use the human intelligence to prevent the creation of tragedy or war. Therefore, the energy strategy of eternal development is to develop new energy including the renewable energy such as solar energy, wind energy, earth thermal energy; intelligence energy such as reusing effectively the traditional energy, steam electric generation, electric car, fuel battery; and waste energy such as agricultural waste, industrial waste, urbanite waste, recovery of waste.

    The concept of eternal development gives us the trend of future energy supply going to the direction of new energy, including (1) “distributed type high efficiency power supplying system, such as having the independent power supplying system for the building and community, the user prepared partial power supply; (2) various energy resources, such as alcohol oil, solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen energy, earth thermal energy. If we will say that the computer is the most revolution products for the mankind in 20th century, we can predict that the new energy revolution will be the most revolution products for the mankind of the 21st century.

    To welcome the coming of the new century, to give the beautiful living condition for our children and future generations, to assist the development of new energy industry in our country, under the support of the Energy Committee of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, we have established “New Energy Center of National Taiwan University.” We have invited the scholars from the academy in Taiwan and in the world, and those enthusiastic people with the idea of looking for eternal development to join with us. We can not hide ourselves in the ivory tower. We have to create the communication bridge with those people who cared about new energy sources and with all the friends in academy and in industry with the idea of eternal development and through the mutual understanding, care, assistance, cooperation to meet the future challenge. For the past years, we have received many generous supports from the society to the academy. We have deeply moved that our society has existed a flow of power for the going up for the better. All we need to do are to work harder, we can be sure the ideal will be fulfilled very quickly.
